Fall Sensory Bin

Sensory bin for fall. Great for toddlers, preschoolers, or older children!

I LOVE putting sensory bins together for my daughters to play with.  They're a perfect play option for when I'm putting dinner together or for afternoon quiet time.  The girls can sit and play with a bin like this for 30 minutes or more!  Of course we play outside to enjoy the real sounds, smells, textures, and sights of autumn.  But this Fall Sensory Bin, which we played with as part of our Fall Theme Home Preschool Week, is a great way to bring some of that fall goodness indoors without bringing in the dried leaf scraps, tiny creepy crawlies, and grime of more natural materials.  Put it together once, and play with it all fall!

The materials in your sensory bin will vary based on what you're able to find.  I suggest checking out the dollar section at Target, dollar stores, and craft stores for little fall goodies.  We like to use these 16 Quart Plastic Storage Tubs for our sensory bins.  They are big enough to allow room for kids to play, but don't take up too much space on shelves or in closets.

Our fall sensory bin has a base of popcorn kernels, plastic pumpkins and acorns (from the Target dollar section), glitter pumpkins and gourds (also from Target), acorns, and fake leaves (from a craft store, in the floral department).

I also always give my girls a muffin tin and an ice cube tray, some random kitchen tools, and little natural pots.

Spread out a big sheet (or take it outside) and let your little ones get to work!

My girls always gravitate toward the muffin tin.  They like to make little "cakes" and add different toppings from the other items in the bin.

See what your kids will come up with!  I hope this Fall Sensory Bin will be as big of a hit in your house as it is in ours!
