Dinosaur Theme- Weekly Home Preschool

One week's worth of EASY activities for homeschool preschool. Science, crafts, picture books, snack, and more!

We love dinosaurs!  Here's what we were up to for our Dinosaur Theme Home Preschool Week.  Maggie was sick with her first (of likely many) colds this fall, so that put a bit of a damper on things.  Since we didn't get around to doing TONS of stuff, I've featured a few other great activities that I had planned to do for you to consider using with your own little ones. At the time we did these activities, Lena was a young 4 and Maggie was about 2 1/2.

Dinosaur Stomp Painting

It was during this activity that I realized Maggie was heading south for the week.  She normally would have happily stomped away, but instead was pretty grouchy for the whole thing.  Oh well.  Lena had a great time with this process art, and I know that lots of your kids would like it as well.  Read all about our Dinosaur Stomp Painting!

Printables

I love the Letter of the Week printables from Confessions of a Homeschooler.  This week we pulled out our set of D is for Dinosaur.  I did this kind of thing a lot with Lena when she was younger, but Maggie hasn't had as much experience with them.  She loved getting to do real school, so it might be something that we try to do more with in the future.

Paper Dinosaur Hat

These DIY paper dinosaur hats are too cute, and were simple to make.  A little bit of a costume can really help your child's imagination take off!

Picture Books

Brontorina, by James Howe, as part of Paper Dinosaur Hat as part of Dinosaur Theme Weekly Home Preschool

Our favorite picture book this week was Brontorina by James Howe.  While my girls can romp and stomp with the best of them, they also love to play ballerina.  This book was hilarious to them.

Television

In an ideal world, we probably wouldn't let our preschoolers watch any television, right?  But dinner has to be cooked, Mama needs to vacuum, and sometimes the girls just need to sit still.  So we watch a little television.  I try to find things that are related to our theme for the week, and we love using Netflix and Amazon Instant Video since we don't have cable.  I can almost always find some quality programming for my girls to watch.

This week, we watched some episodes of the PBS series Dinosaur Train.

Wafflesaurus

Dinosaur Snack

This cute little breakfast or lunch was easy to put together, and you could easily modify it using whatever you have.  You need something round (pancake, bagel, waffle) cut in half for the body.  Cut some fruit into several spikes to go along the back.  We used cheese sticks for the legs, but you could also use pretzel sticks or graham cracker sticks.  The dinosaur's neck is a banana, cut to shape and halved lengthwise so that it would sit flat on the plate.  His head is a cucumber, his eyes are chocolate chips, and his smile is cut from a fruit leather.

More or Less Math Activity

I really wanted to set up this little math activity to do with Maggie, but when all of our little dinosaurs went missing, I had to abandon those plans.  This idea from Counting Coconuts is so cute and simple.  Read all about this activity, and tons of other dinosaur activities on her website, here.

Dinosaur Stomping Feet

These dinosaur feet made from tissue boxes from Rainy Day Mum would have been perfect to wear along with our dinosaur hats, right?  Make these feet and the dinosaur hat and watch your kids stomp away.

Dinosaur Ice Excavation

We have actually done this activity from Mom to 2 Posh Lil' Divas several times, and I can assure you that your kids will love it.  We couldn't do it this week because, again, the dinosaurs went missing (I probably should have looked them before Monday morning when it was time to use them, right?).  Click over for the full instructions.
