Winter Sensory Bin

This base of this sensory bin is made from Epsom salt, which can be found in the pharmacy section of your local drug or big box store.  It can also be purchased from Amazon, and comes in several lovely scents that would add a nice element to this bin (although we just used plain).  While it should not be consumed by children, it is harmless enough that you shouldn't have to worry about it if your little ones get a few tiny bits in their mouths.  They do need to be WELL SUPERVISED, however, because some kiddos love salt and might try to chomp down on too much.

The other items in this bin are cotton balls (snowballs), snowflake confetti (found in the party section of a craft store), sparkly pompoms, blue tinsel garland, laminated winter words, and reusable ice cube jewels (Ours were from the Target dollar section.).

The reusable ice cubes are a really nice addition to this bin.  Freeze them a couple of hours ahead of time, and then your whole bin will feel nice and chilly.  As the ice cubes melt and condense, the Epsom salt clings to them and looks very pretty.

Make sure to spread out an old sheet for your kids to play on-- then you can just pour what has spilled back in to the bin when you're done.  Also, you'll want to make sure that your kiddos wash their hands when they're done.

The Epsom salt is great fun to play with.  You can pour it.

You can smush your hands around in it.

You can let it run through your fingers.

You can make snow muffins!

My girls played with this bin for over an hour!  I sat and poured Epsom salt on their hands for over 5 minutes straight.  I'm sure we'll be pulling it out many more times this winter!
