Dried Pasta Ornaments- Kid's craft for Christmas. EASY! Great for toddlers, preschoolers, or older children.

When I was 5 years old, I made these Dried Pasta Ornaments (these exact ones, in the picture below) in Mrs. Hyde's kidnergarten class.  My family hung them on our tree every year, and then my mom passed them on to me - along with several boxes of other childhood ornaments - the first year that I was married.

We've faithfully hung them on our tree every year since then, and I've always been amazed at how well these have held up through the years.  I thought my girls would like to make their own!  This ended up being a great project for my 2 and 4 year olds.  They got some great fine motor work and loved making ornaments just like Mama's.

Gather Your Materials

Directions

Trace your cookie cutters on to the cardboard and cut out Christmas shapes.  You'll see holes punched in the shapes in our pictures, but I ultimately decided that another method of hanging them would be better.  Ignore the holes!

Let your child cover the shape with glue and pasta.

Layer it up-- the more the better!  Set the ornaments aside on waxed paper to dry.

Once dry, paint with either acrylic paint or spray paint.  I was pleased with how thick and shiny the paint was.  Tempera paint would not hold up very well.  Acrylic paint is typically NOT washable, so make sure to cover your surfaces (and your children) well.

If you don't feel comfortable letting your children use nonwashable paint, you may paint them yourself or use spray paint.

Let them dry.  Using a hot glue gun, glue a short length of ribbon into a loop on the back of your ornaments.

Hang them up, and keep them for over 25 years.
