Patriotic Dancing Rings for Fourth of July. Red, white, and blue ribbon streamers are perfect for kids to encourage gross motor play to celebrate Independence Day.

These Patriotic Dancing Rings for the Fourth of July are just the thing to encourage some gross motor play!  My girls loved dancing, running, skipping, twirling, spinning, and playing with red, white, and blue trailing behind them.  We made them as part of our Independence Day Home Preschool Theme, and I think we'll take them along with us to our city's Independence Day parade, as well!

You'll need:
  • Red, white, and blue ribbon (I ended up not using the ribbon on top of the stack in this picture-- turns out it was 'wired'.)
  • White craft foam
  • Rings (ours were plastic, but wooden ones would be nice as well)
  • Hole punch
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Scotch tape

Cut lengths of ribbon, about 4 -5 feet long.  Attach the ribbons to the rings.  Apparently this kind of knot is called a "Larks Head Knot" if you need to look up instructions, but it's the kind of knot you would intuitively use to loop one piece of ribbon onto a ring.

Cut stars from your craft foam.  I printed this star template from Activity Village, cut out one of the stars, and traced it.

Punch 2 holes in each of your stars.

Thread the stars onto the blue ribbons.  I used three stars for each dancing ring-- 2 on one blue ribbon and 1 on the other.  It seemed to be enough stars to make them starry but few enough so that the ribbon wouldn't get tangled on them.

You may want to also ensure that the ends of your ribbon won't fray.  I simply used Scotch tape, 'sealed' the ends, and trimmed the excess tape.

That's it!  Let your kiddos run, dance, and play!
