Alphabet Bandage Bears

Pre-K alphabet learning game that incorporates fine motor skills with bandages. Perfect for a doctor theme unit preschool week.

Is there is a child on the planet who doesn't love playing with bandages?  I don't think so.  Every year my girls get a box of bandages in their stocking that they can just play with, and we end up with those pesky little wrappers ALL OVER THE HOUSE and imaginary boo-boos ALL OVER THEIR BODIES.

I decided to take advantage of that bandage love during our Doctors and Dentists Theme Week of home preschool.  Since Maggie is learning her letters, I made this quick and easy Alphabet Bandage Bears game for her.  Opening up all the bandages and getting them onto the bears was great fine motor work, as well!

Set up the game by writing the letters on a sheet of paper.  Since Maggie knows most of the letters, I included the whole alphabet.  You could also use a strip of paper with just a few letters to choose from if that is better suited to your child.  Place a small counting bear (or any other counter or small object) above each letter.  Add a small dish of bandages.  You can get them very inexpensively if you keep an eye out for deals and coupons.

Next, tell your child that a certain bear has a boo-boo and needs a bandage.  For example, I told Maggie, "Teddy bear 'A' needs a bandage!"  Your child will then identify the correct bear, open up a bandage, and place it on the bear.

If your child gets stuck, you can help them identify the correct letter by narrowing it down to a particular color or row.

Your child not only gets great alphabet identification practice, but working on all those bandages is great for fine motor skills.

I wasn't sure how long this game would keep Maggie's attention.  She's not always very keen on 'school' games or activities.  But to my surprise, she wanted to keep going until she had done ALL the bears!

Except for the purple and blue ones, which she decided were the Mommies and Daddies, and who didn't get hurt.  Makes perfect sense, right?

Overall, this activity was a real winner for us.  It had alphabet practice, fine motor practice, and a bit of imaginative play thrown in as well.
