Fit-It-Together Sponge Painting. Great process art activity to explore square and rectangle shapes! Preschoolers, kindergartners, and elementary kids will work on spatial skills while making beautiful art!

We love process art!  Young children can have trouble painting things, but projects where the process itself makes a beautiful result are so satisfying!  This Fit-It-Together Sponge Painting also has a great math/spatial element to it, as your children will have to think about how to make all the sponge printings fit together to fill the page.  My girls loved this painting project- I hope yours will, too!

Cut the sponges into various sized squares and rectangles.  We ended up using about 6 sponges total, and had plenty of variety to use different sizes in different colors.

Squirt paint onto your paper plates.

Fit It Together!

Let your child dip a sponge into the paint and press it onto the paper.  I explained to the girls that they would be trying to cover the whole page in interlocking squares and rectangles.  I showed them with the clean sponges how some of their paper might look, with the edges of each shape right up against the edges of another shape.

I was actually surprised with how quickly my youngest, Lena, understood the project.  She's usually my free-spirited creator, who doesn't like many guidelines for her work.  She really took to this idea, though!

Encourage your children to try to avoid having square or rectangles of the same color touching each other.

Keep painting!

Fill your paper with different colored squares and rectangles.  Your child will have to hunt through the sponges to find a shape that will fit the space they have.

Making the final print to fill the page finishes the project!

The finished product reminded me of a beautiful quilt, with interlocking shapes and colors.  My girls each wanted to make several pages of Fit-It-Together Sponge Painting!
