Fall Fabric Scrap Collage. Process art for toddlers, preschoolers, or elementary kids. Bright and colorful, great way to make REAL art with children and use up some fabric scraps while you're at it!

My girls are absolutely obsessed with my fabric stash.  Whenever they notice my big bins of fabric the ask me if they can have some to play with or use in their art.  I decided to put them to good use this week for some fall collage art, and I love how the project turned out!

This may just be my favorite art activity that I've done with the girls.  This Fall Fabric Scrap Collage is bright, colorful, and actually looks good up on our wall!  I love the gorgeous colors and textures of this project, and Lena and Maggie both loved working on it.

Gather your materials:
  • canvas (ours were 18" x 24")
  • fabric scraps in fall colors
  • pinking shears (optional)
  • Mod Podge (We started by using an Outdoor variety, because that's all I had on hand, but finished the project off with the Gloss type.)
  • paint brushes

Begin by cutting small fabric scraps.  Using pinking shears gives the fabric a great textured look on the canvas.  Cut a variety of shapes and sizes.

Set out a canvas, the fabric scraps, and your Mod Podge.

Lena and Maggie hadn't used Mod Podge before, so I had to tell them how to use it!  Spread a thin layer on the canvas then place your fabric in place.  Next, brush another layer of Mod Podge over top of the fabric.  It took quite a bit of practice before Lena had the hang of pressing hard along the edges of the fabric and sort of swooping up to keep her brush from pulling the fabric up off the canvas.  Maggie was using a roller style brush which worked really well for her.

One of the great things about this project  is that little wrinkles and upturned edges of fabric corners only add to the texture and look of the finished project.

Keep adding fabric until the canvas is covered, and then set aside to dry.  Maggie, who is only 3, got tired of working on hers and asked me if I would finish it for her.  If you're working with younger children, you might want to use smaller canvases.

After a day or so, we went back over the canvas with a final thick layer of Mod Podge to make sure that everything was covered and to give it a nice shiny appearance.

The Mod Podge made the colors of the fabric look so rich and vibrant!

See all those wrinkles and the pinked edges?  Don't they look great?!

I loved how this project so much that I used them to replace the artwork over our mantle (that has been there since we moved in over 7 years ago).  The girls are so proud to have their art displayed so prominently in our home!
