Planet Earth Pom Poms. Quick and easy Earth Day craft for kids. Work those fine motor skills!

My girls love playing with pom-poms, but I recently realized that we've never made them ourselves!  Since Earth Day is fast approaching, we decided to make some Planet Earth Pom Poms  in pretty blues and greens, using some of my (embarassingly large) yarn stash.  Lena especially enjoys projects that involve yarn, so she loved this project and made 2 giant ones, and 4 tiny ones.  She would have made more, more, more, but we had to clean up and get dinner ready.  I think that most preschoolers can do the majority of this craft, but will need a little bit of help from an adult to tie them off.  Your kids will get some great fine motor work while they're at it!

You need yarn and scissors, of course.  While we used separate shades of blue and green, a variegated yarn would be pretty as well.  To make tiny pompoms, you need a large fork, and to make giant pompoms you need 2 toilet paper tubes.

For a giant pompom, hold 2 toilet paper tubes together and wrap the yarn around them.  We found it easiest to hold several strands of yarn together, but you could also do different colors one after another.  Don't squeeze too hard.  Keep wrapping until the yarn is nice and thick.  For a giant pompom, it needs to be VERY thick.  Cut the strands of yarn away from the skein.

Cut another length of yarn, about 12".  Slip the ends of the yarn between the two cardboard tubes on either side of the thick yarn wrap.  Tie a tight knot.  Slip the whole pompom off of the cardboard tubes and tie another strand of yarn directly over the first, but tighter (as tight as you can).  You'll be able to tie it tighter once its off of the tubes.

To make tiny pompoms, the process is the same but you'll wrap your yarn around the tines of the fork.   Wrap until you have a nice thick bundle.

Cut the strands away from the skein.  Using another piece of yarn, about 8-12" long, slip one end through the tines below the yarn and the other end through the tines above the yarn.  Tie a very secure knot around the yarn wraps, as tight as you can.

Slip the whole pompom off the fork and tie another strand of yarn directly over the first, but tighter.  Cut the loops, then fluff it all up and trim the ends so that it's nice and even.
