Fuzzy Brown Bear Craft. Fun art project for toddlers, preschoolers, or kindergartners using textured paint.

This cute little bear craft was easy and fun!  We made it as part of our bear themed weekly home preschool, but it would also work well with the Eric Carle and Bill Martin Jr. book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear.  You probably have everything you need on hand!

Gather your materials!  You'll need paper plates, a stapler, brown paint (we had to mix colors), white school glue, shaving cream, a paint brush, a plastic fork, scraps of construction paper, scissors, and a glue stick.

Start by mixing up your paint.  This is a standard "puffy paint" recipe that you can use for anything that you want to have texture.  Mix equal parts white school glue and shaving cream.  Then add brown paint to make a brown bear.

Next, prepare your bear's face.  Cut two small circles out of one paper plate (you could also use cardstock) and staple them to the top of another paper plate to be the bear's ears.  The staples will be covered up by the paint.

Paint him up!  Make the paint nice and thick.  Glob it on.

Once the bear and ears have been covered, cut out 2 pink circles to go in his ears, 2 black circles for eyes, a brown snout shape, and a black oval for his nose.  Use a glue stick to attach them (although it's probably not necessary, since there is glue in your paint).  Draw a little mouth.

As the paint dries, use a fork to make a fuzzy texture in the paint.  Lena's paint wasn't very thick, so she made her fuzziness right away and it stayed.  My paint was much thicker, so when I first tried to make the bear fuzzy, the paint just oozed right back together.  I just left him on the kitchen table and made fuzzy fork marks whenever I walked by, as he dried, for an hour or so.  Your paint may be thicker or thinner, so just do whatever works best!
