Ocean Theme- Weekly Home Preschool

SHARE:

Our Ocean Theme Home Preschool Week was filled with ocean fun, but also with getting ready for vacation, so this Mama was a little too busy to do a full-scale preschool week!  Since our week was pretty light, I'm featuring several other great ocean activities from other bloggers for you to consider using in your own home preschool.  Next week we'll be back to our usual jam-packed week.

If you regularly do preschool using weekly themes, be sure to check out Over 30 COMPLETE Weekly Preschool Theme Units that we've completed as well as my entire list of 52 Weekly Preschool ThemesYou may also want to check out of Daily Home Preschool Schedule and this handy FREE Printable Preschool Planning Page.

 Ocean Sensory Box

This ocean box was the first 'sensory box' that I made for my kids, well over a year ago.  They play with it often, and love the feel of the rice running through their fingers.  I use blue rice, a Safari Toob of ocean animals, some seashells that we bought from a craft store, and some flat marbles (ocean glass).  I always add in cups and spoons, and have a muffin tin and ice cube tray for the girls to play with as well. If you need a tutorial on how to dye rice, I can recommend this one from Happy Hooligans.

Magic School Bus

The Magic School Bus DVD series, used as part of ocean theme week preschool

The series finale (Season 4, Episode 13) of The Magic School Bus television show takes the class on a field trip to a coral reef.  The series is available on Netflix, and we love them!

Planet Earth

We also watched a little bit of the Discovery Channel's series Planet Earth this week.  My oldest, at 4, can watch this for a little while at a time, and my toddler sort of tunes in every now and then when something dramatic happens.  It's nice and calm, provides tons of great real world images, and is sort of 'guilt free' television in my book!

Aquarium

Blurry aquarium picture, field trip during ocean theme week preschool

Take a trip to an aquarium this week!  The reason I chose to do ocean week was mostly because our annual pass to the aquarium is about to run out, and I felt like we hadn't used it enough.  So off we went!

If you don't live near an aquarium, or don't want to shell out the big bucks to visit one, then your kids would be just as happy with a trip to a local pet store to look at the fish.  Staring at fish tanks is oh-so-mesmerizing!

Rainbow Fish Craft

This simple ocean craft was easy and fun for both of my gals.  They loved making their fish and oceans!

Fish Puzzle

This particular puzzle from Melissa and Doug is a little simple for my girls these days, but I bring it out every now and then to watch this scenario unfold. Every single time, Maggie enjoys mixing up the colors.

And then Lena can't stand for them to be wrong, so she fixes them.  Every. Single. Time.  Funny how our kids come wired a certain way, huh?!

I talk all the time about how much I love puzzles for kids, and Melissa and Doug makes lots of great ocean themed ones that you may want to choose from.

Picture Books

Boy, oh, boy, are there tons of ocean books out there!  I chose ours and had them on hold at the library.  When I went to pick them up, there was another mom right next to me at the library counter who was also picking up a huge stack of ocean books for her kiddos.  We had a good chuckle together.  I'm glad there are plenty to go around!  Here are the books that we read and enjoyed.

Sea Foam Bath

There are no picture of my gals in the tub, but I made them a simple ocean bath one night this week.  Just add blue food coloring and bubble bath (sea foam) and some plastic ocean animals.

Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo, watched as part of ocean theme week preschool

My girls were SO excited to watch Finding Nemo this week!  We have a little Disney version book of the story, and I don't think they even knew that there was a movie, so they just squealed and squealed when I called them down to watch.  It's super cute, and shows a lot of good ocean scenes.  We watched ours through Amazon Instant Video.

Other Great Ocean Activities

This Seaside Play Dough from Adventure in a Box is so beautiful and inviting!  It looks like it would be nice and peaceful for kids to play with.

My littlest one loves small world play, and I know would really enjoy playing with this little egg carton ocean from The Imagination Tree.  She'd swim tiny little fishies around for a long time!

Cute, cute, cute puffer fish fork painting from Crafty Morning.  Painting with forks is fantastic!
