Mexican Flag Craft for Kids. Perfect way to study Mexico or celebrate Cinco de Mayo with your toddler, preschooler, or elementary child.

Cinco de Mayo is coming, so it was time to expose the girls to a bit of Mexican culture.  This little Mexican Flag Craft was so simple to put together-- you can grab what you need and get it all set up in under 5 minutes.

I started by showing the girls where Mexico was.  Found it!

Next, I explained that Cinco de Mayo is a holiday when people celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.  I showed them a picture of a Mexican flag and we set about to making our own.

Gather your materials:  red and green paint, cotton swabs, white card stock, and a pencil.  I lightly drew lines to separate the flag into thirds, and put a dot of green on the left and a dot of red on the right.

Show your child how to use a cotton swab to make dots in each segment.

Maggie decided she would rather use her fingers.

And Lena decided to make another flag where she filled in the whole space rather than make dots.  They're all beautiful.

Set your flags aside to dry.  Next you'll need to print an emblem to go in the center.  I used this image from the website Printable Colouring Pages.  I cut and pasted it, popped it into a Word document, and then re-sized it.  I would be happy to share that with you, but for copyright purposes you'll have to do it yourself.  Use this image of the Mexican coat of arms from Wikipedia to copy the colors as you color your emblem.  (Or you could simply print a color version to begin with.)

Cut out the emblem and glue it to the center of your flag.

All done!  Above you'll see (top left and then clockwise) an adult version, Lena's 4-year-old version, Maggie's just-turned-3-years-old version, and Lena's dot version.
