Choose Your Colors and Smash Your Chalk

Put about 2 sticks of chalk in each bag.  Feel free to mix colors.  The first time we did this was at the end of last summer, so we had lots of broken chalk bits.  We just put all the 'bluish' ones in one bag, all the 'pinkish' ones in another bag, and so on.

Close your plastic baggies tight and use a hammer to smash the chalk into fine powder.  My almost-4-year-old could basically do it by herself.  My 2-year-old loved helping me hold the hammer.  Make sure all little fingers are out of the way!  I usually have some paper towels ready to use to cover the baggies if they get too many holes during the hammering.  It is okay to have some chunks left behind.

Mix Your Paint

Pour the powder into your containers.  Add about 1 cup of water (or better yet, let one of your helpers pour the water).  Stir it up!

As your children use the paint, you may need to add more water.  The paint may get a little bit less vibrant, but you should be able to use it for quite a while.  When you're done, put the lids on your containers and save it for antoher day.  You should be able to get 5-10 uses from it before the color fades too much.

Make sure to buy plenty of chalk on clearance at the end of summer so you'll have enough for next year!
