Otis and the Scarecrow, part of children's book review list about fall

Otis and the Scarecrow - by Loren Long

The Otis books are some of my absolute favorites for preschoolers.  In each book, Otis learns a lesson, but they are often more subtle and a little more sophisticated than other books for very young children.  I think if your child is ready for these lessons, they'll pick up on them.  If not, they'll just enjoy the story.  This is a great story about friendship, inclusion, and compassion for others.  The beautiful fall colors and scenery and a huge part of the book's appeal.

Strega Nona's Harvest, part of children's book review list about fall

Strega Nona's Harvest - by Tomie dePaola

My girls love Strega Nona!  In this book, Strega Nona plants her annual garden and then sings a special song to the moon to help her veggies grow.  Her faithful helper, Big Anthony, wants his own garden, so he copies Strega Nona's charm, but adds a little extra touch.  His garden grows out of control, leaving Strega Nona with a mysteriously abundant bounty!  We love the simple illustrations and harvesty color scheme.  This book is great for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary aged children.

Fall Mixed Up, part of children's book review list about fall

Fall Mixed Up - by Bob Raczka

What a cute book!  A little boy celebrates all things fall, except things just aren't quite right.  Apples turn orange, Thanksgiving dinner is celebrated with a bounty of sweets, children jump in to piles of sticks, and so on.  My girls love mixed up things and thought that this book was absolutely hilarious.  It is great fun for preschoolers, toddlers, and elementary aged children.

Leaf Man, part of children's book review list about fall

Leaf Man - by Lois Ehlert

Leaf Man is a classic fall book that showcases the beauty of the changing colors of leaves.  Ehlert makes all sorts of different animals, scenes, and objects out of images of leaves.  Some of them are a little tricky to spot, so it is a great book to develop your child's visual discrimination.  One of my favorite parts is the very end, which Ehlert has labeled all the different kinds of leaves that she uses throughout the book.

Baby Loves Fall, part of children's book review list about fall

Baby Loves Fall: A Karen Katz Lift the Flap Book - by Karen Katz

Karen Katz books are fantastic-- they're full of simple drawings, bright colors, and simple but engaging text.  This one is a lift-the-flap book, which makes it even better!  Baby Loves Fall is perfect for babies and toddler.

Treasury for All Seasons, part of children's book review list about fall

Julie Andrews' Treasury for All Seasons: Songs and Poems to Celebrate the Year - Selected by Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton

This collection of poetry is a must have for your home collection.  There are 5-10 poems for each month of the year.  Some are short, and would be easy to teach your children to memorize.  Others are longer and paint a vivid and wonderful picture of the season.  There are selections by Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Ogden Nash, and more.  The illustrations are beautiful, as well, and may help to draw your children in to the poems.

Fall Ball, part of children's book review list about fall

Fall Ball - by Peter McCarty

Peter McCarty is the author and illustrator of many children's books, his most famous of which is Caldecott Award winner, Hondo and Fabian.  In Fall Ball, McCarty tells a cute story of a group of children who gather together after school to play some football.  The illustrations are whimsical and sweet.  The book felt a little nostalgic for me, since many children can't (or don't) gather to play together outside together after school any more.  This book is suitable for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary aged children.

Awesome Autumn, part of children's book review list about fall

Awesome Autumn - by Bruce Goldstone

This non-fiction book is full of bright pictures and engaging text.  It explores many different aspects of fall, including the sounds, smells, and feels of the season.  This book is suitable for preschoolers and elementary aged children.

Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze, part of children's book review list about fall

Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze! - by Maureen Wright

In Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze!, a bear thinks that it's his own sneezes that are making the leaves fall off the trees and the birds fly away for the winter.  The wind has to convince him that it is not him, but the autumn breeze that is causing those changes. My girls enjoyed this cute story, and I think that other toddlers and preschoolers will as well.

How Do You Know It's Fall, part of children's book review list about fall

How Do You Know It's Fall? - by Lisa M. Herrington

This book is a great little non-fiction book for toddlers and preschoolers.  It provides very basic, but thorough, information about fall, including the weather, animal behavior, several holidays, and more!  I liked that it uses real photographs instead of drawings.  I think its important for children to be exposed to plenty of non-fiction early in life so they learn that books are not just stories, but are also great sources of information.

Apples and Pumpkins, part of children's book review list about fall

Apples and Pumpkins - by Anne Rockwell

A young girl and her parents partake in a traditional fall activities-- apple picking, visiting a pumpkin patch, carving a Jack-O-Lantern, and trick or treating.  The text is straightforward and direct, and would be a good way to introduce children to these activities in the beginning of the fall season.  The illustrations, too, and simple are sweet.  This one was a favorite in our house during fall week!

Pick a Circle, Gather Squares, part of children's book review list about fall

Pick a Circle, Gather Squares: A Fall Harvest of Shapes - by Felicia Sanzari Chernesky

What a fabulous book!  A family takes a trip to a pumpkin patch, looking for shapes along the way.  Each page spread is about a different shape, and your child will have fun searching for all of the particular shapes hidden within the artwork.  The illustrations are done in a collage style and are visually rich, with intense colors, texture, and details.  Perfect for your toddler or preschooler who is learning shapes, this book is one not to miss.
