Valentine Suncatchers- Beautiful watercolor heart process art painting project for preschool, kindergarten, or elementary kids. Brighten up a dreary winter day with this pretty, colorful craft!

Here's a quick Valentine's Day process art project for you and your kids. It couldn't be any easier, and couldn't be more beautiful!  We LOVE crafting with doilies-- the little holes and frills make everything about them seem so fancy!  In the past, we've used doilies to make Valentine's Day T-Shirts, pretty Spring Flowers, and Christmas Trees!  Another great thing about doilies is how well they take watercolor paint.  Like a coffee filter, the doilies just soak up the color and spread in a beautiful way.  Once they're dry, the light from a sunny window shines through them to make light and airy suncatchers.  In the middle of a dreary winter, these Valentine Suncatchers are just what you need to brighten up your windows!

You'll need watercolor paint, a paintbrush, heart shaped doilies (available in craft stores), yarn, and tape.  Set up for painting on a craft tray or plate, and provide a cup of water and paper towel for rinsing the brush.

Let your children paint the hearts!  Pretty tricky, huh?

Maggie preferred to paint hers mostly one color.

While Lena enjoyed making different color combinations!

We just put on some music and painted the afternoon away!  Set the hearts aside to dry.  The paper is so thin that they dry very quickly.  You could easily paint the hearts in the morning and then string them up in the afternoon.

String Hearts Onto A Garland

I just LOVED how pretty they all looked together!

We've made a lot of garlands before, but they've always gone horizontally.  For these suncatchers, we thought they'd be pretty hanging on a vertical string in the windows.  All the holes on a doily make it super easy to string them in any direction you want!

Tape or tie them in a window, and watch the sun shine through!

This would be a great project to do with an entire preschool or elementary class.  I think they look best when there are LOADS of them!  We're certainly enjoying our Valentine window!
